So kick back, grab a biscuit and maybe a cup of tea, and escape into what was, an unforgettable event.
Harlem’s legendary 125th Street became a cultural epicenter as the Rise Up NYC summer concert series delivered an unforgettable evening of music, recognition, and legacy. Thousands gathered between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard for a free celebration headlined by R&B powerhouse Johnny Gill and hip-hop icon Big Daddy Kane.
Johnny Gill Receives the Key to the City From the moment Johnny Gill took the stage, the crowd was captivated. Known for timeless hits such as “My, My, My,” “Rub You the Right Way,” and “Fairweather Friend,” Gill’s rich vocals echoed through Harlem, blending nostalgia with undeniable stage presence. The evening reached its peak when Mayor Eric Adams presented Johnny Gill with the Entertainers’ Key to the City of New York. The honor highlighted Gill’s multi-platinum career, his impact as part of New Edition and LSG, and his contributions as both an artist and humanitarian.
The audience erupted in applause, celebrating an entertainer whose artistry has uplifted generations. Big Daddy Kane: Honored & Honoring Not to be outdone, Big Daddy Kane brought hip-hop energy and charisma that reminded Harlem why he remains one of the genre’s greatest. Kane received a Mayoral Honorary Citation, recognizing his contributions to music and culture as one of New York’s most influential voices in hip-hop history. But Kane made sure the night wasn’t just about him. In a touching moment, he brought out Scrap Lover and thanked both Scoob and Scrap Lover for their decades of loyalty and artistry as his legendary dancers, a duo that transformed hip-hop stagecraft into unforgettable performances. Kane also paused to honor the memory of the late, great Biz Markie.

With heartfelt words, he reflected on Biz’s legacy, their friendship, and the laughter and creativity Biz brought to the culture. The crowd responded with cheers and a wave of love, keeping Biz’s spirit alive in Harlem’s night air. Rise Up NYC: More Than a Concert The Rise Up NYC series has become a staple of New York’s cultural calendar, offering ten free concerts across the five boroughs. The Harlem show, blending soulful R&B and classic hip-hop, stood as proof of music’s power to unite and inspire. Harlem — a neighborhood long known as the heartbeat of cultural innovation — was the perfect backdrop for a night that honored both living legends and those who’ve passed on but remain eternal in music history. Final Thoughts
This night in Harlem was more than a concert. It was a celebration of legacy — Johnny Gill receiving the Key to the City, Big Daddy Kane honored with a Mayoral Citation, Scrap Lover joining the stage as Kane gave thanks to his dance family, and a moving tribute to Biz Markie. In the spirit of Rise Up NYC it was a reminder that music not only entertains — it heals, it honors, and it keeps history alive.
On this night, Harlem rose up, and the culture rose with it. Rise up New York City August 2025
