An Unforgettable Encounter with Motown Legends Dr Otis Williams and Ronnie McNeir

Last week in London, 2nd July 2026, I had the privilege interviewing two living legends of Motown music: Dr Otis Williams, the lead and original surviving member of The Temptations, and Ronnie McNeir, of The Four Tops. Ronnie is also famous for Northern Soul. I had wanted to interview Dr Otis Wililams for a long time and my friend Ronnie McNeir made it possible when he told me that The Temptations and The Four Tops would be in the UK on tour. The interview was held at the Grosvenor Hotel, a stunning venue with a majestic ambience that set the perfect tone for what would become an unforgettable experience.

Despite feeling tired and a bit nervous that day, especially with new equipment I had literally just purchased, I was determined to capture every moment of this unique conversation. The new tripod worked perfectly, however, I struggled with the new microphone clips, and was very aware that Otis would be arriving anytime soon. I prayed fervently that there would not be much background noise, however, I ended up not using the microphones, too fiddly. Then Otis entered the room, and I knew it was time to begin. Ronnie was already in the room.

Setting the Scene at the Grosvenor Hotel

The Grosvenor Hotel in London is a place that carries its own history and grandeur. Walking through its elegant halls, I felt the weight of tradition and excellence, which seemed fitting for meeting artists who have shaped music history. The room we were initially offered for the interview was too dim, so we quickly moved to a brighter space that allowed for a more comfortable and lively conversation.

The atmosphere was relaxed but charged with anticipation. Dr. Otis Williams and Ronnie McNeir, both seasoned performers, carried themselves with a quiet confidence, one of humility and warmth. Their presence alone was inspiring, along-with their sense of humour and constant banter, and I could sense the deep respect and friendship between them. And to top it all, we also had delicious cheesecake with even more laughter.

The Brotherhood of Motown Legends

One of the most striking aspects of the interview was witnessing the genuine bond between Otis and Ronnie. Their shared history about their formative lives in Detroit, the groups who inspired them at the time, the influence of Motown and the brotherhood that journey created between them. This was evident in their laughter, stories, and the way they finished each other’s sentences.

Otis Williams spoke about the early days of The Temptations, recalling the challenges and triumphs that shaped the group’s sound and legacy. He emphasized the importance of staying true to their roots while evolving with the times. Ronnie McNeir shared his journey with The Four Tops, highlighting the responsibility of carrying forward a legendary name and the joy of connecting with fans across generations.

Their stories were filled with vivid memories of studio sessions, tours, and the camaraderie that kept them going through decades of change in the music industry.

Behind the Scenes, having a bit of fun. Lighting hmmm - need a new room!

Highlights from the Conversation

The Legacy of The Temptations

Otis Williams reflected on the enduring appeal of The Temptations, a group that has influenced countless artists and genres. He spoke about the importance of harmony, choreography, and storytelling in their performances. Otis also touched on the challenges of maintaining the group’s identity as members changed over the years.

Ronnie McNeir’s Role with The Four Tops

Ronnie too shared about his early years in Detroit and the influence and impact watching other artists, had on him. Ronnie is a man with a wonderful sense of humour and a lightness of spirit. He was also excited to share about a new project that he had been working on with his son and with Otis, the first ever time The Four Tops and The Temptations would be producing a song together.

The Royal Albert Hall Concert

Both artists expressed excitement about their joint UK tour and the upcoming concert at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday 3rd July. They talked about the thrill of performing live and connecting with audiences who have supported them for decades. The concert promised (and was) to be a celebration of Motown’s golden era, with timeless hits and heartfelt performances. Throughout the conversation, there was always the acknowledgement and honouring of their fans, people who had supported them and to who they owed their success.

The event at the Royal Albert Hall was a wonderfully romantic and nostalgic reminder of the good old days. A time of nostalgia as I sat listening to a mix of Temps and Tops render My Girl, Papa Was Rolling Stone, Treat Her Like A Lady, I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch), Just My Imagination, Reach Out I'll Be There," and "Baby I Need Your Loving." Each group dressed with the finese of that time, along with smooth moves. Taking us all on a wonderful trip down memory lane.

The Impact of Motown Music Today

Listening to Otis and Ronnie, it became clear how music of their genre continues to resonate with people of all ages still to this day. Their stories highlighted the genre’s ability to bring people together and inspire new generations of musicians, songs that talked about the sentiments of love, togetherness. Songs that had depth and richness, that told a story, that spoke to the soul.

The interview also reminded me how important it is to preserve and celebrate musical heritage. These artists are living links to a pivotal time in music history, and their work remains relevant and powerful. This is all about creating legacy.
