On Thursday 21 May, the 2nd anniversary of the Global Fair Pay Charter was commemorated in Portugal, through a distinguished series of events whilst also honouring the legacy of Catherine of Braganza from Portugal who became Queen consort of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1662–1685). The occasion also reinforced a global mission centred on dignity, fairness, and justice in the world of work. I had the privilege of being invited to attend the Gala, and also I was to be honoured with a Brevet by His Royal Highness the Duke of Braganza, The Duke of Braganza, as I was nominated by Sir Asif Bajwa, KCR KCRC GCST.

The Global Fair Pay Charter Gala welcomed an esteemed gathering of guests, including His Royal Highness the Duke of Braganza and his family, royal families, ambassadors, dignitaries, and international leaders from across the world.  The date was also symbolically aligned with International Tea Day.

Under the leadership of Sheikh Aliur Rahman KCR KGOR OBE and Sir Asif Bajwa KCR KCRC GCST Ambassador of Global Fair Pay for Portugal and Portuguese speaking countries, who works closely alongside Sheikh Aliur Rahman, The Global Fair Pay Charter formally presented to the United Nations in 2023 continues to gain international recognition, including support from UNITAR, the United Nations, Commonwealth Secretariat, House of Lords, and the European Parliament.

The programme began with a pre-Gala event featuring a lecture by Isabel Stilwell at the Oureana Historical-Cultural Foundation on the legacy of Catherine of Braganza, followed by exclusive tea tasting and talk hosted by Sheikh Aliur Rahman OBE at The Montebelo Mosteiro de Alcobaça.

The Gala was hosted by Hamdan and Ihsan Sheikh, with speeches delivered by distinguished guests including Sheikh Aliur Rahman KCR KGOR OBE, Sir Asif Bajwa KCR KCRC GCST, Dom Duarte Pio (Duke of Braganza), and Dr Md. Sabur Khan, amongst others.

The evening concluded with honours and presentations, hosted by Mr Carlos Evaristo.  Sir Asif Bajwa had officially nominated the following for honours, Esther Austin and Dr Saroj Velamakanni, who were invested with brevets presented by Dom Duarte de Bragança, Duke of Braganza and Head of the Portuguese Royal House.

Throughout the evening, networking and collaboration flourished across diplomatic, business, charitable, and cultural sectors. More than a celebration, the Gala marked a renewed call for global engagement with the Fair Pay Charter reminding the world that dignity, fairness, and human wellbeing remain essential to progress.

Acknowledgement also goes out to the support and attendance of distinguished guests.
