Friday 13th February, I travelled up to Ipswich to spend some time with a friend and to enjoy an evening at the beautiful Regent Theatre, where the Varna International Ballet were performing Swan Lake. It felt like the perfect way to combine a catch-up with a touch of culture.
Walking into The Regent Theatre, and waiting to get my press pass, I could sense an excited anticipation within me. I had reviewed many many different types of performances, events etc however, I had always wanted to see Swan Lake and this was finally my opportunity.
From the moment the curtain rose, I was drawn into Swan Lake’s romantic world. There was no verbal dialogue, no noise, just magical creative artistry in the form of dance, ballet and the craft of story telling. This created a calming, nostalgic feel for me, as I settled snuggly into my seat.
The company performed with elegance and the corps de ballet created beautifully symmetrical patterns in the lakeside scenes. The “white swan” moments were particularly captivating, with the dancers moving in graceful unison and capturing the ethereal quality that makes this ballet so beloved. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so through the grace of movement and the poise and the outfits worn, beauty become a more introspective observation, one that touched on all the emotions.
The lead dancers brought emotional depth to their roles, especially in the tender pas de deux, which were performed with poise and expressive chemistry. While the staging was more traditional and modest than some large-scale productions, it retained all the charm and storytelling power of this classic work.
Each movement was part of the jig saw of powerfully poignant story-telling, each voiceless expression became a mesmerising interaction of emotion.
The audience were glued in a way that was mesmerising, obviously seasoned theatre goers, who appreciated such a performance and in a sense for me, this was the epitome of nostalgia.
Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening a lovely blend of friendship, travel, and timeless ballet.
