Esther Austin Global went along to The Soul Town Festival where a plethora of artists would be performing.
Full of anticipation at not only seeing some of our favourite legends perform, we were also excited to be meeting many of them for the first time face.
I arrived to the event around 1.30pm as I wanted to see Gwen Dickey perform. One of my ultimate favourite artists with classics such as 'Car Wash' and 'Wishing on a Star'. As I meandered around the Press area, the novelty of being in the midst of such great artists/performers/entertainers hit me. People I grew up listening to, who were part of my many emotional experiences were here.
Gwen's performance stirred up feelings of nostalgia. Despite appearing visibly cold and a little uncomfortable, her voice remained as strong as ever, highlighting her professionalism as both an artist and performer, as the saying goes 'the show must go on'. It was clear that she still had a deep passion for her craft, and as she sang some of her well-known songs, she effectively captivated the audience. Gwen managed to evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for the past, establishing a connection with the crowd. Moreover, there was a sense of reverence towards this exceptional woman, as the audience embraced her energy and unity during her rendition of 'Wishing on a Star.'
Car Wash" a song by Rose Royce written and arranged by the ex-Motown producer Norman Whitfield kicked in an absolute favourite of mine and the crowd went mental, Voices raised, singing along and simply enjoying another nostalgic moment.
'Love Don't Live here Anymore' bought the tempo down a little, the crowd visibly taking a chill pill down memory lane.
ODYSSEY
Then on came Odyssey, Lead Singer Steven Collazo, KayJay and who energetically took to the stage performing a mix of some of their newer tracks with some of their classics such as 'Native New Yorker', 'Inside out', 'If you're Looking for a Way out'.
The vibe definitely ramped up as the crowd joined in. I looked behind me, a sea of smiling faces, many with drinks in hands, others holding onto partners or friends enjoying the moment. A huge majority of the crowd were young people and it was quite poignant in a way that these classic, old skool legends were still being embraced and were still able to pull a crowd, hungry for their music.
