Gwen Dickey Opens Up for Shalamar: The Golden Tour 1976 - 2026

Friday, 10th July was truly an unforgettable evening. I had the chance to witness and celebrate Shalamar's performance at Charter Hall in Colchester. They were marking Shalamar: The Gold Tour 1976 - 2026, and I was thrilled to join in the celebration. The show had evolved since I last saw them a few years ago, and in my opinion, it just keeps getting better. This was more than a 50-year celebration; it was an incredible milestone.


Gwen Dickey was the opening act for Shalamar. I'm loving her new and revamped look for the past few years. Looking glamorous and indeed very hot (as the UK has been experiencing an intense heatwave, making the venue very warm), Gwen was ready to perform. She captivated the crowd delivering her classic hits. She didn't need to do much to entice the audience to interact, to participate, as they were already eager and waiting. Gwen wore her heart on her sleeve, and her voice did the rest.





There was an unspoken respect from the audience that subtly filled Charter Hall, a respect for a woman whose voice still reminded people of who she was, the voice of Rose Royce and someone who had been a part of their lives for a very long time. Between the timeless classics and nostalgia of Royce Roses' classics such as "Car Wash" "Wishing on a Star," Gwen performed a rendition of "Ain't Nobody Loves Me Better," and the crowd were on their feet again, continuing the rave. Gwen then gave us a taste of her upcoming release called Water. On July 17th Gwen releases "Water", her second single from the EP - "This Is Gwen Dickey". Then, a moment came that truly showed the crowd's love for this woman. There was a palpable honoring of her. Despite struggling with the heat and, I surmised, feeling a bit uncomfortable in it, after performing "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" and once the applause settled, someone in the crowd shouted, "We love you," and Gwen responded 'I love you too' and that was when it happened. A flood of love and Gwen began to cry. People stood up, continuing their applaud. There was a crescendo of something truly honouring building and in those few moments, something profound occurred. The love, nostalgia, honoring, support, and recognition for a woman named Gwen Dickey were evident as well as being at this event where Gwen Dickey Opens Up for Shalamar: The Golden Tour.
